Innovative Art Centre : 

ENHANCING THE ART APPRECIATION AMONG SOCIETY

Abstract:

Based on the data collected in 2016 from The Peak Magazine, it reveals an average Malaysian visits the art gallery and museum only once a year. If the cultural and creative fuel is not injected into the city, Malaysia will slowly become transient. Nowadays, the New Millennials communicate differently than the previous generation, they prefer to communicate through more interactive & dynamic digital means. The existing art galleries, exhibitions, expos and programmed do not communicate through mediums favored by the New Millennials, maintains an aura and norm were unapproachable and distant of the collections. The limited explanations make people feel isolated, and the relationship between people and art has not changed substantially over the years. Therefore, a new age gallery is needed where newer forms of communication-based on digital technology & interactive media help to convey the impacts of art.

The thesis project, Innovative Art Centre (IAC) is in Seksyen 52 (PJ New Town) in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It is a strategic location surrounded by rich cultural & urban context that is formed by the PJ community. In 2015, Petaling Jaya turned into an important ‘city of art’ by the government. With the integration of technology & interactive media, the art centre creates a better psychological model of the art experience for the users through an immersive environment blended with extendable visiting experience in contemporary architecture. The art centre entices the society to involve with art by provides a variety of participatory or interactive art programs in which the residents are free to explore the collaboration of different arts in a way to leave an imprint on the community. While the collaboration between artists is an effort to push forward a new agenda of art, encourages the artist to collaborate amongst each other and the community to craft art that is ‘innovative’. IAC aims to enhance the awareness and appreciation of arts of the society, brought the community to life through healthy interaction, lead arts into their lives by building a bridge between visitors and artworks. Hence, strengthen the bonding and the integration of the PJ community.
